Ren & Stimpy is a famous cartoon gang on Nickelodeon about a chihuahua named Ren and a crazy cat named Stimpy. It first premiered on August 11, 1991 on Nickelodeon and ended on December 16, 1996. It was created by animator John Kricfalusi.

Description[]

Ren & Stimpy is about a short-tempered dog named Ren Hoek and a dim-witted cat named Stimpy. In the show, Ren and Stimpy do weird things together and mess up at times but they learn to get along in the end.

The Ren & Stimpy Show premiered on Nickelodeon in August 11, 1991 and ended on December 16, 1996. It was about a psychotic chihuahua dog named Ren Hoek and a crazy dim-witted cat named Stimpy. It was created by the controversial animator John Kricfalusi.

The Ren & Stimpy Show years (1991-1996)[]

On August 11, 1991, The Ren & Stimpy Show premiered on Nickelodeon as the third new Nicktoons show. The show ended on December 11, 1996.

Cancellation and cult following (1996-2003)[]

On December 11, 1996, after The Ren & Stimpy Show was cancelled, the show quickly gained a cult following and eventually aired on reruns on MTV and Spike (TV channel).

Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon (2003)[]

In 2003, a spinoff of The Ren & Stimpy Show aimed at adults was aired on Spike (TV channel). The show was notorious for having explicit adult content and graphic sexual content that it only aired for 1 season and 6 episodes. The show premiered on Spike on June 26, 2003 and ended on July 24, 2003. The complete adult series was released on DVD on July 18, 2006.

DVD release and reruns on Nicktoons (2004-2011)[]

In 2004, The Ren & Stimpy Show was released on DVD with The Complete First and Second Season being released on October 12, 2004. Seasons Three and a Half-ish was released on June 28, 2005. Season Five and Some More of Four was released on September 20, 2005. The Lost Episodes DVD was released on July 17, 2006 and The Almost Complete Series was released on February 6, 2018.

Criticism and Controversy[]

Ren & Stimpy have been criticized for having frequent toilet humor. violence, slapstick, and adult humor at times. Although the show is from the 1990's, kids cartoons at that time were notorious for having adult humor, but at the same time they were both for kids and adults alike. However, Ren & Stimpy was also praised for its clever writing, story development, and interesting segments. The show also had recycled music in many episodes but it was mostly classic 1950's to 1970's stock music used in old promotion films. Overall, Ren & Stimpy was a good show from the 90's and also had decent reviews from fans who grew up with the show. Ren & Stimpy also gained a cult following in the 1990's and 2000's for the subtle adult humor that was appealing to both kids and adults, and was considered one of the best shows of the 1990's as well as one of the best cartoons of all time, along with Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, The Angry Beavers, Rocket Power, Doug, The Wild Thornberrys, and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Man's Best Friend controversy[]

In 1993, a banned episode of The Ren & Stimpy Show titled "Man's Best Friend" was produced but never aired on Nickelodeon. It was about Ren becoming friends with a man who liked dogs and the man became friends with Ren and the man nicknamed Ren the Dog "Man's best friend". In the episode, Ren beats up the man and pokes his eye out of his cornea. This episode was so violent that it never aired and it became infamous for Ren & Stimpy that the creator John Kricfalusi was fired from Nickelodeon during the middle of season 2. The show became less violent and graphic after Kricfalusi was fired and during seasons 3-5. The show was cancelled on December 16, 1996 after 5 seasons and 52 episodes with 93 segments.
